David Boreanaz Attends Home Opener!

Prior to the LA Galaxy's season opener against the New England Revolution on March 27, actor David Boreanaz came out early with his family to watch warmups from field level and talked about his experience with the game. Fans will recognize Boreanaz from his current hit show Bones on FOX, and of course from his earlier work on Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Enjoy!

Does anyone smell that?

A lot of you know that we got a new-to-us car a few weeks ago. When we cleaned out the old van for trade-in, we took out a lot of used kleenex, drink cups, crumpled pieces of paper, assorted detritus and 2.5 kilos of ground beef with a "packed on" date of September 2009. Wait. What?

I blame those new fangled cloth environmental bags. The old plastic bags used to crackle and looked out of place in the back of a trunk. Nowadays I have to keep the cloth bags in the car at all times because I'll forget them at home. So obviously when I came home from Costco that fateful fall day and put the meat bag in the back, it blended in with the probably 20 other empty cloth bags back there, mummy-brain kicked in and voila. A perfect storm.

It was September so it never really got stinking (pun intended) hot again. The meat never went septic. Then winter came and the beef just froze and thawed over and over until we found it. It was in a state of defrost under the back seat and leaking... let's call it red juice... when Scott discovered the bag. I'm just super thankful that we didn't decide to get rid of the car in July.

Will You Be There?

Following their first season opening victory in six years, the LA Galaxy will look to make it a perfect two for two on Thursday night when they host Chivas USA at 8 p.m. at The Home Depot Center in the year's first installment of the Honda SuperClasico.

So my new neighbour Daisy came over yesterday

and just to let you know I did end up showing her around. Just a few rooms and it felt right. So thanks for the advice, you guys. We had tea and coffee and chatted for a couple hours about nothing in particular. She even brought me a box of my favourite cookies. Aaah, the life of the unemployed.

One Last Look Back at Saturday Night

The Galaxy were back on the field Monday morning to begin preparations for Thursday's nationally-televised match against Chivas USA.

But before we fully move on to the SuperClasico, let's take on last look at Saturday's 1-0 win over the New England Revolution in the home opener, locker room comments included.

Tooth Fairy question

Last week I was going through an old diary looking for information on my cat. For your information I found out he's 12 years old. Anyway, I love looking at my old journals. They're full of pithy insights and thought-provoking statements. There is no sign of insane ramblings or ridiculous jabberings. None at all. That having been said, please let me show you what I wrote on Wednesday 22 January, 2003:

"I just played Tooth Fairy again. I love having kids! I left a toonie under Elliott's pillow. The problem is the teeth because I have 4 now in my jewellry box. How long do I keep them? What do I do with them? I feel like a strangeoid saving teeth. Maybe a craft project? Two alliterative words: Macabre maracas."

That was 2003. Today my jewellry box is heaving with 33 teeth. I used to make an effort to separate them, keeping track of whose teeth were whose but now they're all mixed together in a spooky New Orleans voodoo curse kinda pile. So my question still stands: What do I do with them? Am I really expected to throw them out?

Oh, and before you freak out and mention that Audrey will read this, I went into my Facebook settings and blocked her from seeing anything I post. So I'm back to swearing in my status updates. Okay, I never swore in my status updates.

Circumnavigating the world in an autogyro

Norman Surpus and the Gyrox
Norman Surplus, departed on 22 March from Larne, Northern Ireland, to attempt to circumnavigate the globe in an autogyro called "Gyrox". It has never been attempted before. An autogyro (or gyrocopter) uses an unpowered rotor in auto-rotation to develop lift and an engine-powered propeller, to provide thrust.

Challenges

The trip is expected to take approximately four months and cover over 43000km, stopping over in 26 countries along the way. Considering the nature of the adventure and proposed travel route, some severe weather conditions should be expected along the way. It's quite a brave attempt considering that an autogyro has an open cockpit! Not to mention the long stretches of open water that need to be covered. To make this possible, Norman's gyro was fitted with extra fuel tanks which will extend the normal 300 mile range to 800 miles. Then there's the challenge of relying solely on the pilot's own visuals since he's not allowed to use instruments to navigate (gyro rules). Finding fuel in remote parts of the world may also present to be a problem.

Motivation

Norman recently beat a bout of cancer and this motivated him to embrace life more intensely. He will raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK during the trip.

You can track the Gyrox via the SPOT GPS.

Road To The Rally Hits Santa Monica Today

The Road To The First Kick Rally has made two stops already -- Orange County and the Inland Empire -- and they've been terrific so far. Lots of fans have showed up to take their picture with the 2009 MLS Western Conference, and 2009 SuperClasico Cup, and with either Yohance Marshall and Bryan Jordan or members of our Miss LA Galaxy Court (see photos below).

Tonight, the Cups will make on final stop before tomorrow's pre-game rally at the Off-Campus Pub. If you want to join us in the festivities, come by the Ye Olde Kings Head from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Like we said, the Cups will be there, as will Miss LA Galaxy.

For now, enjoyed this behind scenes video of Nicola and Liz from yesterday's interview at KRCA 62 and photos from the last two days.

Wow! No blog in the hopper for today!

So I'm writing this one on the fly for the first time in ages! Live to air, so to speak.

I'm all dressed and ready to go grocery shopping and I'm wearing (among actual clothing) really red lipstick, a favourite of my mum's, and her pearl earrings. Why? Because I dreamt about her last night.

I love dreaming about my mother. It happens once every few months and I really treasure them. So this is that happened:

My mother, my aunt Bernice (her next oldest sister and spitting image of her) and I were sitting on a couch together. Mum was wearing a blue striped turtleneck that I loved but gave to Goodwill years ago when I got too fat it shrunk. She told us that she had a scan and the original cancer was gone but there was something new and she pointed to her breasts. She wasn't sad at all, her eyes were twinkling and she had a huge sheepish grin on her face like she was telling us that she accidentally left the parking brake off and let the car go down the driveway into traffic.

I started to cry while my aunt comforted me and my mother rushed up and out of the room. She came back with a large, gorgeous, brown worn leather designer purse and told me she wanted me to have it. Even after 15 years long gone the woman still knows how to cheer me up. I look inside and among the old kleenexes, Halls lozenges and purse dust, I found two ticket stubs from a ballet that she and I had gone to at Place Des Arts in 1977 when I was 10.

Then the alarm went off and I was still crying. How strange was that dream? So since today is errand day, I'm going to get a lotto ticket and play 1-9-7-7. Maybe it's an omen. Of course it could mean that I'm destined to spend $1,977 dollars on a new bag. So either way it's a win.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

I was getting ready for the day the other day and it occurred to me that because I have nowhere to go I have all the time in the world to finish up. It took about 40 minutes from start to finish. I listened to music, went in and out of the bathroom and basically faffed around until I was ready. Ready for grocery shopping but that's neither here nor there.

Yesterday I performed an experiment. I went from bed to makeupped and ready as if I was late for something. Why? I said it before and I'll say it again: I think I may be clinically depressed. No reason, that's why. My alarm clock went off and I was showered and completely ready in 15 minutes. See what happens when you have no hair to fix? I suggest this haircut to anyone. So what did I do when I was finished getting ready as if I was in flames? I baked a cake and did 3 loads of sheets. Oooh, yeah, I'm a rebel, yo.

How can I be Black and still not get away with that "yo"? Too old?

David Drops By

David Beckham showed up at The Home Depot Center Wednesday morning, catching some of his LA Galaxy teammates by surprise ahead of the club’s home opener against the New England Revolution on Saturday night.

Beckham, who is recovering from surgery to his left Achilles tendon, visited with his teammates and coaches in the locker room before attending his first Galaxy training session of the year. He mostly watched from the benches, but was in good spirits.

"I want to thank all the LA Galaxy fans who have shown me such support since I've got my injury. I'm also extremely grateful to the manager, players and staff who have been there for me,” Beckham told LAGalaxy.com. “I'm now back in LA starting my rehabilitation and want to get back playing for the club as soon as possible. I wish the team well for the start of the season, I will be behind them all the way.”

Mark Rogondino's View from the Booth

Galaxy Television Analyst Mark Rogondino checks in with his popular column, View from the Booth, where he breaks down the upcoming game.

Be sure to visit lagalaxy.com before every game for Rogondino's thoughts on the match.

Time to roll out the ball and strap on the boots, MLS First Kick has finally arrived at The Home Depot Center. I don’t know about you, but Saturday’s game against New England is a date that I have had circled on the calendar for months. Galaxy fans filling the stadium, the smell of the concession stands, the field freshly mowed, game days are a special event and something we have gone four months without. While the offseason usually flies by for me, the past few weeks have been going at a pedestrian pace. Never fear, week one is here!

In contrast to the past few season with the LA Galaxy, there are not nearly as many questions entering the season. This is nearly the same roster that finished last season, with a couple of added new faces. The vital components in LA’s run to MLS Cup 2009 are back and eager to take things one-step further in 2010. Several players have echoed exactly that to me in the past couple weeks. Edson Buddle said that the image of missing that final penalty in Seattle fueled his training in the offseason. Dema Kovalenko explained how it pained him that he fell ill right before the Championship game and wasn’t able to contribute in the most important match of the season. Landon Donovan stated that this team was “so close to lifting the trophy.”

The journey to going one-step further begins on Saturday.

Prior to last season, the New England Revolution had either won or tied the season series with LA dating back to 1999. The Galaxy came away victorious in both contests in 2009, but had not beaten New England in the nine previous meetings before then. Maybe the tide is turning between these two teams, and it is heading in the Galaxy’s favor.

The Revolution will be without a number of their regulars to open the season. Taylor Twellman (concussion symptoms), Matt Reis (recovering from knee and shoulder surgeries) and Shalrie Joseph (hip flexor) are not expected to travel. Add to that New England no longer feature Jay Heaps, Steve Ralston, and Jeff Larentowicz, all moving on after lengthy careers with the club.

So you are probably wondering which players head coach, Steve Nicol will throw out in the starting eleven, and maybe he is too. Well, the answer is a ton of young players. Many of these young players earned MLS experience last season, due to the number of injuries the Revs had to play through. Youth usually means speed, and that is certainly the case with the 2010 edition of New England.

Sainey Nyassi, Kenny Mansally, Kheli Dube and newcomer Zack Schilawski all possess the quickness to get in behind the Galaxy defense. Nyassi and Mansally attack from wide positions, while Dube is a player that can finish chances around the area, as he showed last year by finishing tied for the team-lead in goals with eight. If these players are allowed to see time and space with the ball, LA will be doing a lot of chasing in the final third of the field.

One way to limit the above listed players from having freedom to operate is controlling the tempo in the midfield. Kovalenko and new Brazilian teammate, Juninho are the keys here. If the Galaxy can use the ball-winning talents of Kovalenko, and then play through Juninho to find Donovan and Co. in open spaces, LA should be in great shape. Landon will look to find space all over the field, but will likely start the game in a wide midfield role, which, in my eyes is his best position. There is no doubt he has the pace to get back and help out defensively, and going forward is one of the most difficult to deal in MLS, when running at defenders with the ball at his feet.

The defenders will have less to worry about if the midfield does its job. Sean Franklin has the athleticism and speed to stay with the faster players in the New England line-up, but Todd Dunivant on the left side will have to count on his veteran experience to deal with the pace of the Rev’s attack. It is always nice to know that you have one of the best goalkeepers in the league, Donovan Ricketts, back there if you need him to bail you out from time to time. I think we all saw that Ricketts is more than capable of pulling off the “big” save when needed.

The longer I'm online,

the carefuller (Yes, it's a word. I typed it, didn't I?) I have to be.

When I first started this blog I talked about everything and anything I wanted. I swore quite a bit and was extremely opinionated. Check some of the old ones from 2006/07 if you don't believe me. I was clever but that was waaaay back when I had 5 to 10 readers a day.

As of yesterday's blog (you know the crappy one I literally did in 5 minutes) I now have on average over 70 readers a day. I feel like Perez Hilton some days. These readers include friends, former colleagues, old bosses, my husband, some (surprisingly few, actually) family and, also as of yesterday, my little girl.

This blog is automatically linked to Twitter, Google Buzz and Facebook where I'm now Audrey's "friend". For the last few years I've become keenly aware of my vast readership so I've been checking myself a bit when it comes to posting. Being a little more politically correct, watching my language and generally behaving myself. But now there's something a little different at work here. My baby girl, the one I gave life to, the one in whom I'm trying to instil a sense of right and wrong and values, the one who doesn't quite yet have the ability to know when one is being sarcastic or exaggerating (especially in writing) has access to my blog. So people, I hope you like vanilla and the exotic seasonings of salt and pepper.

Okay, you know that's not going to last very long, don't you? Looks like another "teaching moment" is on the horizon...

Injured Trio Step Up Rehab Work

With the Galaxy's season opener now just a few days away, the team looks to be getting closer and closer to full fitness. The injured trio of Alan Gordon, Jovan Kirovski and Clint Mathis were all out on the field this afternoon, taking part in training at The Home Depot Center.

While some of the guys who played 90 minutes on Sunday remained inside for a gym workout and recovery session, Alan, Jovan and Clint all made their way outside to get in some work with their teammates and the training staff. Alan and Jovan did some ball work and ran to maintain their fitness, Clint jumped into the small-sided game and made it through the entire session, his most extensive work since undergoing left knee surgery early last month.

All three players are listed as Questionable on the season's first official injury report.

For the opposition New Emgland Revolution, Edgaras Jankauskas, Matt Reis and Taylor Twellman are all listed as Out while Mauricio Castro is listed as Doubtful and Kevin Alston, Darrius Barnes and Shalrie Joseph are all Questionable.

Final injury reports must be submitted to the league on Friday.

Well this should be interesting...

I just set a timer for 5 minutes. I've decided to try to write a blog in that time. Why? Because I don't feel like blogging and because I made a commitment 4 years ago so I'm doing it. What am I going to write about in 5 minutes? Will I go back and correct mistakes? The answers are: nothing and yes. I'm not counting mistake correction or photo searching in the 5 minutes.

So is my time up yet? No? Geez, it's going by slowly. And you are getting a fantastic blog for your patience. Aren't you? Okay, let's do a stream-of-conciousness thing... let's see:

  • "Cake Boss" is on tv
  • The kids are in bed
  • Scott is at hockey
  • I'm worried that I should be working on my daycare contracts (I'll explain when I have more time)
and....

there goes the timer.

That sucked, eh? Almost as bad as my haiku "poetry". Hey, I'll have to write one of those for you guys next time I'm too tired to blog. Oops, I'm going over...

Karen Fun Fact

I rarely turn off the tv.

I turn on the tv at about 9 in the morning and it goes off at about 11:30pm but I actually sit down and watch only 2 shows per day (before prime time, that is); Maury and All My Children. As for the rest of the day, I listen as I go about my day cooking, cleaning and laundering. The other day the power went out and I was completely freaked even though it was daytime. The house was way too quiet. It's so completely silent when the power is out. You don't even realise how much noise a refrigerator makes until it doesn't.

But back to the tv. Some parents limit the amount that their kids watch but I never do. Because that would mean limiting the time the tv is on in general, thus punishing me. Besides, taking away the tv makes it more attractive, right? I very often find the tv in the kids' playroom off and them playing a board game.

So that's today's Karen Fun Fact. We have 4 tvs in the house but incidentally none in the master bedroom. That would totally turn me into a bedsore riddled 400lb shut-in. And no one wants to deal with that.

LA Galaxy vs CD Aguila Post-Game Coverage

Enjoy these photos, courtesy of German Alegria (Muchas gracias compadre!), and then scroll to the bottom for some postmatch reaction from Bruce and Co.

Bruce Arena
On the game:
“I thought that it was a sloppy performance by our team tonight. I don’t think that we did good with our passing, we didn’t take any of our chances, our crossing of the ball on the night was poor. Give our opponent credit, they did what they wanted to do, a classic road mentality. The few chances that we created in the first half, we really should have put one of those away to really open the game up.”

On where the team is heading into Saturday:
“I think that we’re doing fine. You don’t overreact to these things. I think that this was a good game to get in the stadium, especially for the young players, a bunch of nervous players tonight with their first experience in the stadium so that was good to get that experience and hopefully that helps moving forward.”

On the play of his defense:
“The defense wasn’t really tested but overall our center backs had a good game.”

Landon Donovan
On where the team is heading into the season:
“The only thing is that I wish we were a little healthier in a few spots. Tonight, it would have been helpful to throw another forward on but we didn’t have that luxury. But hopefully getting Alan back, Jovan back and healthy will give us some options.”

On the play of the three Brazilians:
“I’ve been very impressed with all three. I think that once they get over the language barrier they are going to be even better, but they are definitely going to contribute this year.”

On this team compared to last year:
“Miles ahead. Aside from tonight, we’re going to create a lot of chances and we did tonight. The biggest thing is that we know each other, we know how to play. The only fault at this point is that maybe we were a little naïve today and when we have a chance to beat a team that is not on our level, we have to beat them.”

Edson Buddle
On the game:
“Overall I felt pretty good. It was a good game, a good warmup for the regular season next week.”

On Aguila’s style:
“The way they play is similar to what we can expect to see in the Champions League and maybe even next week, with New England on the road, they might play that way as well, so it was a good test.”

Tristan Bowen
On the Game:
“It was a bit tough. They came with five in the midfield so that took a little bit of time to figure that out and where to go. Overall I think that we could have done a lot better, it was just a different look.”

On playing the role of creator this season:
“With LD up there you expect him to finish, though there are times he’s going to miss. All I have to do is get the ball into good spots and our forwards will do their jobs.”

On playing out on the wing compared to up front:
“It’s a little bit different. You don’t have the pressure of scoring goals but there are things that come with being a midfielder and you have to make sure you get good service into the box and pick out runners.”

Todd Dunivant
On the team’s growth since last season:
“Last year that was the focus, our defense, and we still have that core. It’s been a good preseason for that now we just have to continue to work and get better going forward and get some crosses in, tonight we struggled in that department. But we’ll get that rust out, we’ll work on that this week and come back ready for New England.

On the team’s struggles against Aguila:
“We weren’t as sharp as we normally are. The crossing wasn’t good, I missed a couple and we just didn’t have that sharpness and crispness to move the ball. We’re going to see that in the Champions League, teams coming in here to get a result and sitting back, so we’re going to have to be crisper, sharper and really attack them when we have the chance. We didn’t do that very well tonight but we’re not hitting any panic buttons, we’ve had a great preseason and we’ll build on that going into the season.”

Dema Kovalenko
On the game:
“It feels good to play a game, it feels good that the season is going to start finally and it feels good that the CBA is out of the way and we can concentrate on the season. We have the same team pretty much, so we know what we have to do, we just have to come out and do it. Today was okay but we have to be better. We created chances, now we have to take them.”

On Aguila as a final tuneup:
“It was good. We were not sharp enough passing-wise, but it’s okay. It was a game and we didn’t lose. We created some good moments, but we were not sharp enough. We will work on that during the week and get better.”

I Had No Right To U

Yanti...
Aku cuba imbas balik tentang aku ngan dia suatu masa dulu.Aku terpaksa(mungkin...)lepaskan dia walaupun mase tue kami dah plan untuk 'bersatu' secara sah dlm masa sebulan lagi.Entah kenapa aku amik keputusan untuk tak meneruskan hubungan kitaowang.Aku memang sukakn dia tapi aku perlu teliti tentang hidup aku terlebih dahulu.

All Systems Are Go For Aguila -- And 2010

The LA Galaxy completed preparations for Sunday's international friendly against C.D. Aguila by training inside the main stadium of The Home Depot Center today. The session was the final training session of the eight-week-long preaseason.

At the same time the players took the field, MLS Commissioner Don Garber and the MLS Players Union took part in a conference call to announce the agreement of new collective bargaining agreement that commences with the 2010 season and concludes on December 31, 2014.

After Commissioner Garber spoke, LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan joined the conference call. This is what Donovan had to say...

Along with Landon, Todd Dunivant and Chris Klein also took a part in the negotiations in D.C. All three are scheduled to return to L.A. later today and will be available to play tomorrow.

Back at The Home Depot Center, Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena was glad the two sides were able to broker a deal -- which allows the 2010 season to kickoff next week as scheduled.

"We're very pleased that there's been an agreement on a new five-year CBA between MLS and the MLS Players Union," Arena said. "We look forward to getting the 2010 season started next Saturday against the New England Revolution. This is going to be a great year for MLS and soccer in the United States."

At the conclusion of training, we caught up with assistant coach Dave Sarachan, forward Edson Buddle, midfielder Dema Kovalenko and rookie midfielder Michael Stephens.

Here's what they had to say regarding tomorrow's preseason finale...

"Cinta Itu Membunuhku.."

.KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Mac (Bernama) -- Hakikat satu kajian!

Two Days Til Aguila

The next to last practice ahead of Sunday's game against Aguila took place this afternoon under sunny skies at The Home Depot Center. The highlight of the day was a string of fast paced 9v9 games which featured all 16 of the club's available field players going back and forth at one another.

Tristan Bowen scored the game's deciding goal for his team, which was made up of Edson, Eddie, Birchall, Omar, Sean, Gregg, Alex, Donovan and Tristan, just before the end, just minutes after Leonardo had equalized for his team.

Here are a few photos from the game, and be sure to scroll to the bottom for exciting news about Sunday's game.
Finally, we be sure to check back here tomorrow for photos from the team's final training session, which will take place inside the stadium, and some thoughts from a few of the guys going into the game against Aguila.

For that game against the Salvadoran power (which you can read about here) we will have a live audio stream right here, with Joe Tutino and Ralph Perez bringing you all the action live. ESPN Deportes Radio 1330 AM will also have all the action live on the radio starting at 4:30 p.m.
